Remote Control

Busy times here at CJGA but we want to do a quick followup on a set of illustrations we created late last year for Remote Learner.

Remote Learner has recently launched a new division to market their e-learning services for government agencies in the UK and Ireland and needed a new illustration that quickly says ‘Government’ and ‘British isles.’ With the entire set of graphics our goal was to quickly tell their ‘story’ in an abstract business editorial style that speaks to big ideas.

A Remote Possibility

This is a set of illustrations we created for another internet technology company named Remote Learner. They specialize in designing, implementing, hosting and supporting online education programs for scholastic, higher-education, corporate and government clients. They needed a set of graphics to help tell their story in an engaging manor. Our goal from the outset was to create a simple visual language with reoccurring elements for instant readability. Yet we didn’t want the final graphics to be to literal. They needed to live with one foot in the abstract business editorial world. The final style we developed combines sharp geometric shapes with a consistent cohesive color pallet overlapping organic painterly textures for to create a sense of place where “big solutions” live.

Good Things Come in Small Packages

This was a CD package we recently created for Nashville recording artist Joshua Pessar.

Josh came to us with a title, One Man Entourage, and a set of beautiful photos taken at a small Nashville music club full of rich local flavor. We listened to his music and heard some elements which felt warm, familiar and rooted in tradition. Additionally there are other musical elements that definitely feel sharp, new and exciting. It’s good ol’ rock’n’roll with something new to say. This balance of old and new is where we drew our inspiration and the direction we ultimately chose.

We instinctively knew this project deepened on giving viewers visual cues about the music contained inside. Since the music is personal, we needed to convey a feeling. So we began the project by combining all the photos to create an entire honky-tonk barroom full of Joshes which expresses the One Man Entourage title. We then gave the photo a sepia duotone tint to convey an emotional warmth and tell viewers this is something that will feel familiar. We then contrasted that with a bright vibrant orange to express an energy and unexpected element which coexists with tradition. This contrasting concept continued throughout with the sharp, crisp and contemporary graphic elements which hint at something old.

At the end of the day Josh was happy and satisfied and we’re always pleased to work with a good client on a fun project.

Good is Better

Good Drinks offers the first line of specialty sauces, syrups and drink mixes formulated without any high-fructose corn syrup. Supplied exclusively to cafés, these products are used to make mochas, lattes, chai teas, hot chocolates and a new line of ethnic drinks. High-fructose corn syrup is ubiquitous in the industry in spite of it’s many known long-term health risks including biochemical evidence it contributes obesity.

We were tasked to create a brandmark which would compel people to make a change for the better. Consisting of a custom font with simple contemporary look, we accented it with bright yet earthy colors to convey a fresh friendly tone. We then produced a group of engaging ads to educate consumers on all the innovative healthy features the brand offers. This same tone carried over to our trade show booth design highlighting the benefits for distributors and café owners. We finished the project off by developing a product mark for Horchata, an upscale rice based drink with a multitude of health benefits in their ethnic drink line.

Building a Better Logo

Here’s another identity project we recently completed which illustrates what we can deliver on a limited budget.

Stephen McRae Construction stands apart from a myriad of other builders because of their attention to detail and their unmatched craftsmanship. Their old logo did not reflect the premium quality of their work nor speak to the refined, subtle tastes of their high-end cliental.

Rather than a simple logo project, we needed to help them build an integrated brand that expressed their core values and spoke to an upscale target audience. We felt the “shouting billboard” style identity used throughout the industry was overplayed. To set Stephen McRae Construction apart, We sought to create a new logo mark which functioned like a designer label, proudly place on finished construction projects like a stamp of excellence.

Our final design is simple yet recognizable and unique. Subtle yet confident. We integrated the letter M with the stylized architectural detail of a Doric Column. We finished it all off with a customized font which expresses a precise and contemporary feel.

I’m getting lots of compliments on the business cards and the new logo. You were able to come up with the perfect logo for my business even though I was only able to give you a vague idea of what I wanted. Thanks for all your hard work and creativity.

    Stephen McRae
    President

Put on the Blue Light

This was another quick logo job for a small night club. This shows the quality of work you can get with a small budget.

As a general rule, the amount of time we invest in a project leads to a more satisfying final design for a client. More time means more thoughtful exploration, more options to choose from, more time to iron out all the details and a final design that more accurately reflects a client’s unique message.

That said, there is absolutely no reason a client cannot get something eminently usable with a smaller budget. To keep costs down on a project, we’ll limit the amount of exploration we do in the initial design phase, the number of preliminary design options we deliver and the amount of time allocated to design revisions.

This is some work we created for a Colorado coffee roaster late last year. There are literally hundreds of coffee roasters in the US so our goal was to differentiate the brand by the highlighting the location and lifestyle of desert town of Durango, CO.

Look at the Alternative

This is a batch of work we recently created for the first company to develop large scale Kenaf growing operations in the US and innovative usage-specific products from the plant fibers. Kenaf is a “wonder plant” in the Hibiscus family who’s usage dates back to the time of the ancient Egyptians. Until recently it’s been relatively unknown outside of Asia. It literally has hundreds of uses in the consumer, industrial and agricultural sectors. It’s fibers can be used to make fabric, engineered wood, insulation, fiberglass, vegetables oil, paper, fertilizer, pesticide, plant mulch and absorbents to clean up oil spills and industrial leaks. It’s a hardy plant that requires few pesticides and has a triannual growing cycle making it more cost effective, environmentally friendly and replenishable than traditional materials. Recent US Navy studies found that Kenaf is the most absorbent natural material on earth. This revolutionary plant is poised to be a key component in the “Green Revolution” and since it is not tied to the commodities market, it’s price stability makes it especially attractive as a component material for product manufacturers.

To help our client establish their brand as a key player in the green industry we developed a hierarchical suite of brand identities which function together as a family. Because their products are used in such diverse applications, we felt an abstract graphic mark consisting of rings was the most appropriate way represent the company. Once the brand marks were refined, we carried them across to a line of product packaging which function together retain while individualality within sub brands. And finally, we worked closely with their web development team to created a group of illustrations for to educate both corporate and consumer consumers on the benefits of their product line.

We’ve posted about this before but we wanted to share. A while back we designed some football jerseys for degenerate standup comedian extraordinaire Doug Stanhope. Today we found a couple promo shots of him wearing our design. It warmed the cockles of our hearts
